College Planning Center of RI and RISLA Accepting Applications for Sherlock Scholarships

Rhode Island Student Loan Authority and the College Planning Center of RI
will award $50,000 in scholarships this year

WARWICK, RI (April 16, 2012) – The College Planning Center of Rhode Island, a free service of the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority (RISLA), a non-profit state agency, is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the annual Paul V. Sherlock Scholarship awards. RISLA and the College Planning Center of RI will award twenty-five $2,000 scholarships to financially needy students this year.

Over the past eight years, the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority has awarded $400,000 to deserving high school students throughout the state. “A scholarship in any amount can help defray the cost of college and reduce the amount a student needs to borrow,” said Stacy Crooks, Director of the College Planning Center of Rhode Island. “The Sherlock Scholarship can help students and parents cover the costs of tuition, fees, books and other college expenses.”

The Sherlock Scholarship was created to honor the memory of an 18 year member of the RISLA Board, who served with great distinction, offering wise counsel and steady leadership to the organization. Paul is remembered for his remarkable career as an educator, statesman and advocate. His legacy continues to live on at the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority through the Paul V. Sherlock Scholarship.

To be eligible for a Sherlock Scholarship, students must be a Rhode Island resident and must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $7,500 or less. Students can download the Sherlock Scholarship application at www.collegeplanningcenter.org. Applications must be received by June 1, 2012 to be considered.
