High School Classes

To set yourself up for success, try to take at least five good academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then push yourself with some tougher courses.

Good Grades

College admission officers will notice. Feel like your grades aren’t up to snuff? Don’t get discouraged. There are colleges for just about every type of student. You need to find the right one for you.

SAT & ACT Scores

Research average test scores at colleges to see where yours fit. Your scores should match your grades. While many schools are test-optional, some may still require standardized admission tests. Check the admissions webpage or contact the admissions office for specific requirements.

Activities

A long-term commitment to activities—whether it’s sports, debate club, or science team—demonstrates initiative and leadership skills that many colleges value. It's never too late to get involved; joining a group in your senior year can help broaden your horizons before you head off to college.

Community Service

Giving back is important and can enhance your high school transcripts. Colleges look for students engaged in activities outside the classroom. A consistent commitment to a public service organization is more valuable than a short-term volunteer role.

Check with your guidance office, local library, or community organizations to find volunteer opportunities.

Internships & Summer Jobs

A summer job or internship demonstrates maturity, responsibility, and financial planning. Maintaining steady work during the school year, summer, or internships showcases work ethic and maturity, better preparing you for college.

College Essays

The essay is a crucial part of your college application packet. This component is essential in many colleges' decision-making processes for several reasons. It provides you with the opportunity to showcase your personality, demonstrate how you will fit into the campus culture, and highlight what makes you unique.
